Marty Sonnenberg, Executive Director, founded Angel Acres, Inc. in August 2003. Her love of horses began 12 years before opening Angel Acres when she faced some medical challenges with cancer. She experienced horse therapy first hand, which helped her physically, mentally, and emotionally. This led her to research horse therapy and training with horses, as she knew she wanted to share this someday. Being an active community volunteer for over 25 years, her two favorite loves in volunteering were working with special needs children and working with horses. Therefore, it was very natural for her to combine the two in creating Angel Acres.
For our childrens’ utmost safety, Angel Acres uses well-trained, wonderful, older horses in our program ages 18 to 26. These horses are no longer able to handle heavy riding, but they benefit from the gentle exercise, which maintains their health, while also helping the children. A win-win for all. Between October 2003 and to the present, we have provided 264 children with 6 weeks of horse therapy. That’s a total of 1,944 rides!
